Strengthening Mining Downstream, MIND ID Accelerates Strategic Projects

Liputan6.com, Jakarta BUMN Holding Indonesian Mining Industry (MIND ID) continues to boost the implementation of strategic projects to accelerate the downstream program which is mandated by the government. This step was taken to increase the added value of mining commodities managed domestically.

MIND ID Corporate Secretary, Heri Yusuf, explained that this downstream program aims to increase the selling value of mining commodities, which in turn will increase state income and encourage national economic growth.

MIND ID is committed to accelerating project completion until it reaches the Commercial Operation Date (COD) of every strategic project they manage.

Smelter Project

One of the strategic projects currently in the final stages is the construction of the Smelter Grade Alumina Refinery (SGAR) which is projected to enter the commissioning phase in September 2024, with a completion rate of 97%.

This smelter is a collaboration project between PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminum (Inalum) and PT Aneka Tambang Tbk (ANTM) through PT Borneo Alumina Indonesia (BAI), which is located in Mempawah, West Kalimantan.

This project is expected to reach COD in February 2025, with an investment of USD 830 million or around IDR 13.1 trillion.

This plant will be able to produce 1 million tons of alumina per year, which is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy by creating jobs for around 1,000 people.

Freeport Smelter Project

Apart from SGAR, MIND ID is also developing a new smelter through Freeport Indonesia, which will have a copper concentrate refining capacity of 1.7 million tons.

This project is a large investment worth 3.67 billion US dollars or around Rp. 58 trillion, making it the largest smelter with a single line design in the world.

MIND ID has also formed a partnership with CATL to build a battery industry ecosystem, including a battery factory and development of an industrial area which is expected to become a center for electric vehicle manufacturers in Indonesia.

“In the next year, MIND ID has a number of superior programs that will help us fulfill state mandates. These projects include expanding the aluminum smelter, adding a coal conveyor, increasing the capacity of tin chemical and tin soldier, as well as developing primary tin block 1 and block 2, added Heri.

With these various steps, MIND ID is committed to continuing to support the national downstream program to boost the economy and improve community welfare.
